Jack Karlson, which may have been one of many of his aliases, died the day after his 82nd birthday, as claimed by film-maker Heath Davis, who is making a documentary on Karlson’s life.
Who was Jack Karlson?
Karlson had escaped from multiple prisons and set up many dodgy deals when the small-time crook was arrested by Brisbane police at a Chinese restaurant in Fortitude Valley in 1991.
Karlson muttered the immortal words: “What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?” He bustled and struggled against police officers as he shouted the words.
However, it is not just the “succulent Chinese” piece that shot Karlson to fame, as he is also known as the “democracy manifest” man.
During the arrest he said: “Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest. Have a look at the headlock here. See that chap over there?”
Before the infamous: “Why did you do this to me? For what reason? What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?”
Also known as Cecil George Edwards, the man gave an impassioned speech promoted by his wrongful arrest, complaining that a policeman grabbed his penis.
Initially going viral in the late 2000’s the clip was later remixed and added to other videos as a meme, or used as a standalone phrase.
The full ramble continued: “This is the bloke who got me on the penis people.
“Oh, that’s a nice headlock sir, oh, ah yes, I see that you know your judo well. Good one. And you sir, are you waiting to receive my limp penis? How dare – get your hands off me! Ta-ta, and farewell.”
